North Wales Coast

Last modified : 4/1/01

Inspired by the excellent North Wales Coast site by Charlie Hulme, this area is my own little tribute to this line.

The North Wales Coast line (as far as this site is concerned) runs from Holyhead to Chester and Crewe, via Bangor, Llandudno Jcn, and Prestatyn (and sometimes extends down to Birmingham!). The line is one of the few 'main lines' in the UK to retain predominantly mechanical signalling with semaphores.

North Wales has become one of the last homes of 'true' loco haulage - English Electric-built Type 3s & pressure ventilated MkII stock with opening windows.

The trains may be noisy - and coming from the 1960s are starting to show their age - but I believe that these trains are more airy and less claustrophobic than the newer DMUs which threaten this line.

Against all the odds, the Class 37s were still hauling trains towards the end of the Summer 2000 timetable. Class 175 DMUs were due to enter squadron service earlier in the year, but a *very* long list of problems have prevented this from happening.

Currently, the 37s have another short stay of execution, this time courtesy of Virgin, who cannot provide enough loco hauled trains along the coast!

Savour the 37 traction while you can!

Below are several pages, one details a recent visit to the line (with photos), while the other shows an archive of pictures from the past couple of years of Class 37 haulage (currently not active!).  The third site shows pictures from the 1991 Trainload Coal Motive Power Day, where no fewer than NINE PAIRS of freight locos featured!!

Enter the North Wales site of your choice!
